Portagioie
is the Italian word for jewelry box.
Gioie means both “joy” and jewel” Porta belongs to a constellation of words pertaining to the act of
bearing, bringing, carrying, which in turn gives rise to the terms for “door,” “gate, and “port.”
Portagioie
can be interpreted in Italian as not only a box of jewels but a container of joy, a doorway or gateway to joy,
something that brings joy. From “Whereabouts,” a novel by Jhumpa Lahiri

Flowers are my language of Love. They have always been. As a young girl, my mother had the most glorious rose garden. I would sit on the brick stoop, watching her commune every morning with her roses. She would cup the flower in her hand and study its beauty… If she were particularly in love with a unique rose, she would gently hold it in two hands and put her face into the petals, the fragrance as if she was laying a tender kiss upon the flower. I remember watching her, in awe, not quite understanding the allure, but knowing somewhere in my 10-year-old body and mind that these flowers were like precious jewels to her.
As I grew older and ventured back home, she would put flowers by my bedside, so I could fall asleep and awaken to their beauty. I do the same with my own children and those that I love.
As a flower farmer, I know nothing more glorious than bringing flowers to people I love, especially those who are flower designers who dance with joy when I bring buckets of jewel colored dahlias, zinnias, cosmos, bachelors buttons, branching sunflowers, and so many more. With this palette, they can create a bouquet, deftly crafted by their own sense of color, texture, scent, and imagination. That is the most joyful part of my flower farming: providing the flowers that inspire their art.
